I have a 2003 Mercedes E320 that leaks gasoline and has been for almost a year, specifically when the tank is full. The smell is nauseating and gives headaches to anyone who is a passenger. I got a letter in the mail from Mercedes in January 2015 admitting this is a known issue and that they are offering an extended warranty, specifically to the fuel tank or any related parts. I took it to my local dealership. They said they would order the part. This was in Feb 2015. Now it is mid-May 2015 and they say the part is on back-order. That Mercedes doesn't even have enough replacement fuel tanks available. I called the NHTSA as one user recommended. They enlightened me that they were going to enforce a recall for this part but because Mercedes came forward with and admitted the fuel tank issue, they are allowed to just call it an "extended warranty" and it is technically an "in-house recall". They advised contacting the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) to file a complaint that Mercedes isn't manufacturing this part in a timely fashion and it is hazardous to continue driving the vehicle in this way. Please do the same. FTC number is: 1-877-382-4357. If anyone has any other information on how to get my fuel tank replaced ASAP PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!! This is totally unacceptable and dangerous.
